If you’re into fantasy anime with a mix of action, comedy, and a protagonist who’s been dealt a bad hand, Yami Healer might just be your next binge-worthy show. The first episode, titled The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows, introduces us to Zenos, an unlicensed healer with a heart of gold and a knack for getting into trouble. The episode sets the stage for what promises to be a wild ride, blending tropes we love with a fresh twist.
Zenos, a self-taught healer from the slums, gets kicked out of his adventuring party for reasons that feel all too familiar to fans of the “exiled OP protagonist” trope. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, Zenos embraces his new life as an underground healer. His first major encounter? Saving Lily, an elf girl on the brink of death, in a dark alley. This meeting sparks the beginning of an unlikely partnership—and possibly the start of something bigger.
The anime, based on the light novel by Sakaku Hishikawa, wastes no time diving into Zenos’ world. The first episode balances exposition with action, giving us just enough backstory to understand why Zenos is the way he is—a man who helps others not for glory, but because it’s the right thing to do.
After scouring forums and discussions, it’s clear that Yami Healer has sparked mixed reactions. Here’s what stood out:
The Pacing Debate
Some fans felt the pacing was awkward, with the first episode jumping straight into Zenos’ post-exile life without much buildup. One Reddit user noted, “This should’ve been the second episode—it feels like we missed the actual introduction.” Others, however, appreciated the non-linear approach, arguing that it made the story feel less generic.
Zenos: Love Him or Find Him Bland
Zenos’ personality is a point of contention. Some viewers adore his deadpan humor and no-nonsense attitude, calling him a “badass alpha sigma MC.” Others find him a bit too stoic, with one MyAnimeList commenter joking, “His voice actor was told to sound as bored as possible.” Still, his OP healing skills and moral compass make him a compelling lead.
Lily’s Introduction
Lily’s backstory resonated with many fans, especially her tragic past and the way Zenos saves her. A fan on MyAnimeList wrote, “Lily’s story was touching—finally, a female character who isn’t just fan service.” That said, some criticized the trope of “saving a female slave” as overdone, wishing for a more original twist.
The Comedy Hits (Mostly)
The humor in Yami Healer leans into absurdity, with moments like a werewolf gnawing on a chair leg or Zenos’ ex-party members getting their comeuppance. One fan laughed, “The fear of Carmilla was hilarious—instant submission!” However, not all jokes land, with a few viewers calling the comedy “hit or miss.”
Production Quality
While the animation isn’t groundbreaking, fans praised the studio (Makaria) for putting effort into the healing scenes and the ED song. A comment on Anime-Planet noted, “For a budget show, the healing animations are surprisingly smooth.”
Yami Healer Episode 1 is a solid, if not revolutionary, start to a fantasy series that knows its audience. It’s got the tropes we love (OP healer, exiled hero, cute elf girl) but adds enough personality to keep things fresh. The pacing might feel off to some, and Zenos’ stoicism won’t win everyone over, but if you’re looking for a fun, easy watch with a side of heart, this is it.
Rating: 7.5/10 – A promising debut with room to grow.
With Zenos and Lily now teamed up, the next episodes will likely delve deeper into the underground healer’s world—and hopefully give Carmilla more screen time. Will Zenos’ past come back to haunt him? Will Lily’s past resurface? Only time will tell, but for now, Yami Healer is off to a strong start.
