If you thought family drama couldn’t get any messier, The Shiunji Family Children is here to prove you wrong. Episode 2, titled Arata Gets Another Confession, dives deeper into the tangled web of emotions among the Shiunji siblings—most of whom aren’t even related by blood. Produced by Doga Kobo (known for My Senpai is Annoying and Love Live! Sunshine!!), this anime adaptation of Reiji Miyajima’s manga has already sparked heated debates, and Episode 2 only fans the flames.
After the bombshell reveal in Episode 1—that only two of the seven Shiunji siblings are biologically related—Episode 2 wastes no time exploring the fallout. Arata, the eldest brother, is now the center of attention as his sisters (and one brother) grapple with their newfound freedom to… well, not be siblings. The episode focuses on Seiha, Minami, and Ouka, each making their moves on Arata in their own unique ways.
Seiha sneaks into his room to “discuss” why he got the smallest bedroom (sure, that’s the reason). Minami, the athletic twin, uses school as an excuse to spend more time with him. And Ouka, the resident tsundere, alternates between criticizing Arata and low-key supporting him. Meanwhile, the internet is losing its collective mind over whether this is a wholesome family story or a thinly veiled harem fantasy.
The MyAnimeList discussions are a goldmine of mixed emotions. Some viewers are hooked, while others are questioning their life choices for even watching this. Here’s a taste of the chaos:
The comparisons to Rent-a-Girlfriend (also by Reiji Miyajima) are inevitable. Fans of that series will recognize the author’s signature blend of awkward romance and questionable decisions. But while Rent-a-Girlfriend had Kazuya’s cringe-worthy antics, The Shiunji Family Children cranks it up with a full-blown sibling love polygon.
Is this show a satire on harem tropes? A deep dive into unconventional family dynamics? Or just an excuse for fanservice with a side of drama? Episode 2 doesn’t provide clear answers, but it does lean into the absurdity. The dad’s nonchalant attitude—dropping the adoption bomb and then vanishing—is either terrible parenting or peak comedy, depending on who you ask.
One thing’s for sure: the anime knows exactly what it’s doing. The dialogue is intentionally awkward, the characters are exaggerated, and the situations are borderline ridiculous. Whether that’s a strength or a flaw depends entirely on your tolerance for anime shenanigans.
The Shiunji Family Children isn’t trying to win awards for subtlety. It’s messy, provocative, and unapologetically over-the-top. If you’re looking for a wholesome family story, this isn’t it. But if you enjoy trainwreck romances with a side of sibling rivalry, Episode 2 delivers exactly that—and then some.
Will I keep watching? Probably. Will I regret it? Almost certainly. But that’s the beauty of anime—sometimes, the weirdest stories are the hardest to look away from.
Rating: 7/10 (for sheer audacity alone)
Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Bilibili Global, or Ani-One Asia’s YouTube channel.
Next Episode Prediction: More confessions, more chaos, and hopefully an explanation for the dad’s bizarre beard-hair hybrid.
