If you’re looking for an anime that’s equal parts hilarious, chaotic, and oddly heartwarming, Gorilla no Kami (or The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl) might just be your next obsession. Episode 2 dives deeper into Sophia Leeler’s struggle to balance her newfound gorilla strength with her desire for a normal school life—spoiler alert: it’s not going well.
Sophia, the timid count’s daughter blessed by the Gorilla God, is now officially a junior knight—a title she’d rather keep under wraps. But with Eddie and Isaac (her new knight buddies) transferring to her school, and Louis (the charming royal knight) making frequent appearances, her hopes of flying under the radar are shattered. The episode is packed with laugh-out-loud moments as Sophia’s attempts to hide her identity backfire spectacularly.
Fans on MyAnimeList and other forums are divided on Sophia’s approach. Some find her reluctance to embrace her power frustrating, like one user who said, “She’s supposed to be a junior knight but acts like it’s a curse. Just own it already!” Others, however, sympathize with her introverted nature, with comments like, “As an introvert, I feel her pain. High school drama plus supernatural powers? Nightmare fuel.”
One thing fans can’t stop talking about is the growing dynamic between Sophia and the three male leads. While Louis seems to have a clear romantic interest in her, Eddie and Isaac are more like protective (and slightly chaotic) best friends. Some viewers are already calling it a reverse harem in the making, though others argue it’s more about friendship.
A Reddit user joked, “Sophia’s got two hot guy best friends and a potential love interest—meanwhile, every girl in school hates her. The struggle is real.” The jealousy from her classmates adds another layer of comedy, especially when Sophia’s attempts to downplay her connections only make things worse.
The Gorilla God’s antics continue to be a highlight. From random gorilla facts to his over-the-top reactions, he’s the comic relief we didn’t know we needed. One fan noted, “The Gorilla God blushing was the best part. Who knew a divine being could be this adorable?”
Not everyone is sold on the animation quality, though. Some critics pointed out that Episode 2 had noticeable cuts and awkward transitions, with one user saying, “The animation feels rushed in places, especially during dialogue-heavy scenes.” Others, however, are willing to overlook it for the sake of the story’s charm.
If you love a mix of supernatural shenanigans, high school drama, and a protagonist who’s equal parts relatable and exasperating, Gorilla no Kami is worth sticking with. The humor is on point, the characters are growing on fans, and the potential for deeper world-building (like exploring other animal blessings) is exciting.
As one fan perfectly summed it up: “This show is ridiculous, cute, and funny—and I’m all in.”
So, will Sophia ever get the peaceful life she craves? Probably not. But that’s exactly what makes this anime so entertaining.
Rating: 4/5 – A fun, chaotic ride with room to grow.
