When I first heard about Gorilla no Kami, I wasn’t sure what to expect. A timid noble girl blessed by the Gorilla God? It sounded like the setup for a bizarre comedy or a cringey reverse harem. But after watching the first episode, I’m pleasantly surprised—this show has a weird charm that’s hard to ignore.
Sophia Leeler, the daughter of a count, just wants to live a quiet life. But in this world, sixteen-year-olds receive blessings from animal gods, and Sophia ends up with… well, the Gorilla God. Instead of something elegant like a swan or a fox, she’s stuck with raw, unapologetic gorilla strength. And honestly? It’s hilarious.
The episode wastes no time throwing Sophia into the spotlight. She tries (and fails) to blend in during the Royal Knights’ entrance exam, only to accidentally dominate the competition with her newfound power. Watching her panic while effortlessly crushing obstacles had me laughing out loud.
Scrolling through discussions, it’s clear that opinions are split. Some viewers, like me, were won over by the absurdity:
Others were wary of the potential reverse harem setup, fearing it might overshadow the comedy:
But the standout moment? The Gorilla God’s thumbs-up. Fans loved it—some even joked about it being the new “DK Rap” meme.
The animation isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s serviceable. The character designs are clean, and the gorilla-related gags are animated with enough energy to sell the humor. The tone leans heavily into comedy, with Sophia’s reactions being the highlight.
That said, the pacing felt a bit uneven at times—some scenes dragged while others rushed. But for a first episode, it did its job: it made me curious about where Sophia’s journey goes next.
Gorilla no Kami isn’t trying to be deep. It’s a lighthearted, slightly ridiculous fantasy-comedy with a protagonist who’s accidentally overpowered. If it leans into the absurdity and avoids generic romance pitfalls, it could be a hidden gem of the season.
For now, I’m sticking around—partly for Sophia’s antics, partly to see if someone gets blessed by a platypus god. (Please, anime gods, make this happen.)
Verdict: 7.5/10 – A fun, if flawed, debut that’s worth checking out if you’re in the mood for something silly.
What did you think of the episode? Let me know in the comments—especially if you’ve got theories about future animal blessings! 🦍✨
