Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (or DanMachi for short) has always been a fan-favorite, blending action, adventure, and a touch of romance in the labyrinthine city of Orario. Season 5, subtitled Goddess Festival Arc, promised to be one of the most exciting installments yet, but it’s been anything but smooth sailing. From production delays to mixed reactions from fans, this season has sparked heated discussions across forums like MyAnimeList and Reddit.
For those unfamiliar, DanMachi follows Bell Cranel, a rookie adventurer striving to become the strongest in Orario, a city ruled by gods and goddesses. Season 5 dives into the Goddess Festival, a vibrant event celebrating fertility and beauty, with Freya’s schemes taking center stage. The arc is packed with high-stakes battles, emotional confrontations, and Bell’s relentless growth—both as a fighter and as a person.
However, the season’s pacing has been a point of contention. While episodes 1-9 were praised for their solid storytelling and animation, the latter half (especially episodes 10 and 11) saw a noticeable dip in quality. Fans have pointed out rushed scenes, awkward cuts, and even some skipped content from the light novels.
The biggest buzz around DanMachi Season 5 isn’t just the story—it’s the abrupt hiatus. Originally slated for 12 episodes, the season was extended to 15, only for production issues to force a delay after episode 11. The remaining episodes won’t air until early Spring 2025, leaving fans hanging at a critical moment.
The reactions? A mix of frustration, resignation, and cautious optimism.
JC Staff, the studio behind DanMachi, has been under fire for its inconsistent animation this season. While the first half looked decent (though not as polished as Season 4), the later episodes suffered from stiff movements and lackluster fight scenes. Some fans joked that the studio “wasted all their budget on the ED’s boob animation.”
Others defended the studio, pointing out that DanMachi isn’t their only project. With shows like Wistoria and Fairy Tail also in production, resources were stretched thin. Still, as one fan put it, “Why prioritize lesser-known titles over your cash cow?”
Despite the delays and animation woes, DanMachi Season 5 has its bright spots. The Goddess Festival arc is one of the most intense in the series, with Freya’s machinations pushing Bell to his limits. The emotional weight of Bell’s growth—and his relationships with Ais, Hestia, and Ryuu—has kept fans invested.
Plus, the delay might actually be a blessing in disguise. If JC Staff uses the extra time to polish the remaining episodes, we could get a stronger finish. As one hopeful fan said, “I’d rather wait for greatness than get mediocrity now.”
DanMachi Season 5 is a mixed bag. It delivers on drama and character development but stumbles with pacing and production issues. The delay is frustrating, but if it leads to a better final product, it might just be worth the wait.
For now, fans will have to survive on copium until Spring 2025. As one resigned viewer put it: “Eh, shorter wait than Dandadan. I’ll take it.”
